Cultural respect and hospitality

Meeting across cultures works best when curiosity is paired with respect. These principles apply whether you are visiting a new place or welcoming someone to your own.

Start with listening

Ask open questions and give people time to answer. Speaking slowly and plainly is often more helpful than speaking loudly. If a word or gesture is unclear, check what the other person means. Avoid treating one person as a representative of an entire country or culture.

Share your own experience without expecting agreement. Beliefs, family life and personal history can be sensitive subjects. Let the other person decide how much to share, and accept a change of topic without pressure.

Make hospitality clear

Discuss what a visit involves before it starts. Confirm the time, who will be present, food preferences, household routines and whether anyone expects practical help or shared costs. Honest expectations reduce misunderstandings for visitors and hosts alike.

An invitation can be declined or changed. Respect a person’s need for rest, privacy and time alone. Receiving hospitality does not grant permission to bring extra guests, extend a stay or share the address. Thank people in a way that fits their preferences rather than assuming gifts or photographs are welcome.

Respect boundaries and privacy

Ask before taking or posting a photograph, sharing a story that identifies someone or passing on contact details. Permission for a private conversation is not permission for public publication. A refusal does not need an explanation.

If an encounter feels uncomfortable, slow down or leave. Courtesy never requires ignoring your own boundaries. Read our Safety page for practical preparation and the Community Guidelines for the standards expected of members. Public profiles can be browsed when their owners enable guest visibility. Private contacts and personal actions require an account.
